In preparation, I've been going through my scraps. I also was lucky enough to find these two booklets.
I've signed up for Temecula Quilts Quirky Quilt Club which will send me six little quilt kits during the year. That, and all the patterns and photos I've been collecting recently, should get me started. See you in 2019!Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-57884973099421350562013-01-30T10:01:00.002-08:002013-01-30T10:31:48.177-08:00Broken Dishes Doll Quilt
I'd forgotten I had these patterns until I looked at Kathleen Tracy's webpage (Country Lane Quilts) and saw them listed for sale as individual patterns. I'd bought them a couple of years ago as part of a doll quilt club which is, alas, no longer available, although individual patterns still can be purchased. She also offers some free doll quilt patterns on that site. Take a peek!Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-24192426962533355912013-01-28T15:27:00.001-08:002013-01-29T16:03:02.462-08:00January, 2013 Small Quilt of the Month January is chose-your-own pattern month for the Small Quilt of the Month 2013 challenge. I went for Broken Dishes from Prairie Children and Their Quilts by Kathleen Tracy because it's an easy pattern and I'm almost out of time! I like an alternative setting she showed in her blog better than the quilt in the book and that's what I used. You can find it here. It helps that it also requires piecing fewer blocks.

Of course, I used some of my new scraps along with some of my old ones! Here are some I pulled to audition. I didn't use them all and added quite a few others. I'm piecing the blocks now, I've found a good setting fabric for the alternate blocks, and am searching for a good border fabric. I really, really want to make this quit in time for the deadline so I'd better get busy! Stay tuned!Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-24665410627000052742013-01-27T20:13:00.001-08:002013-01-27T20:13:39.850-08:00Scrap Fabrics!I don't have enough fabric! Ummm...well, actually I do. I have boxes and boxes of it, but I am a strong believer that it's not possible to have too much fabric and I don't always have the right fabrics. So what did I do last week? Well, I headed over to Homestead Hearth and purchased three of their remnant bags. Each bag contains one pound of fabric, about 2 1/2 - 3 yards. And these are not tiny little scraps either! They're wonderful to expand your stash and inspire more quilts. I bought three of them. I chose the 1800 repro fabrics; the other choices are contemporary florals and prints or a combination of the two. When I bought them there was a delay of 7-10 days because so many people had ordered them. The delay is now listed as 21-28 days, but it is well worth the wait. I know I'll be back for more.
Earlier this month she had a post about a challenge to make 12 quilts--one a month--this year. I liked her week by week plan although I'm not sure I could follow it consistently. I also like using notebooks to help manage everything. I love writing and I'm teaching myself to draw and I collect notebooks and, after rummaging through my desk, found quite a few I could use.

What would help me be more productive is a schedule although not one that goes too far ahead. Every once in a while I come across long lists of quilts I wanted to make written twenty or thirty years ago and see that I actually made very few of them. Oh, I've made a lot of quilts all right, but not the ones on the lists. It seems once I wrote them down I then promptly forgot all about them.

I did organize my stack of little quilts yesterday and discovered some
I'd totally forgotten about and found others that needed to be repaired. I
also realized I didn't have quite as many as I thought because I've
given so many away.

Maybe I'll just try to think one doll quilt ahead and see how that goes. I have a lot of interests--gardening, reading, and knitting being the most time consuming ones after quilting--and have a tendency to flit from one project to the next plus I work two or three days a week. It's not unusual for me to be reading four or five books--fiction and non-fiction both--at the same time, working on several knitting projects--preemie hats, two scarves, a hat to give as a gift--, and, of course, quilts. Right now I'm piecing three full sized quilt tops and have one in the frame that I'm hand quilting. Yes, I love the process best of all but it's nice to actually get a project done once a while. The only thing that's saving me this month is that it's January and I can't garden. Of course, that doesn't stop me from dreaming over seed catalogs!
The first doll quilt I made wasn't a doll quilt. It was a bear quilt. My four little boys used it to wrap their stuffed animals, in particular this one, Honey Bear. This quilt has to be well over 20 years old, probably older.

The pattern is from From the Prairie: A Child's Memories by Joan Vibert and Linda Brannock, published in 1984. There were a series of these books based on the fictional world of a little girl named Sarah Jane who lived on the Kansas Prairie in the 1800s. The introduction to this book starts

The year is 1883. Eight year old Sarah Jane lives with Ma and Pa and baby Molly in a small cabin on the ever expanding Kansas prairie. Their cabin is shared with an orange kitty named Muffie. Sarah Jane's childhood is full of hard work but between the chores she has happy times that are filled with love and wonder. These are the times she writes about in her diary.
I made dolls, quilts, pincushions, and ornaments from these books and loved reading the diaries. Earlier today I stacked up all the doll quilts I've made and counted them. There were 32. There were a couple with loose bindings and I repaired those.

I had started another doll quilt a few days ago, this one called Simply Sweet, a QAL on Cheri's website. But I didn't like the on point setting and that setting made it bigger than I like a doll quilt to be so I just set the blocks without any other blocks or sashing. This is what I ended up with. It's 16" x 20".
I've been distracted the past year with one son's big wedding this past summer and making a quilt and knitting little items for my new granddaughter, Violet Grace. I've also been knitting socks and scarves and working on full sized quilts. But I have been neglecting making doll quilts. It's time to go back to that. Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-3293353525809593002012-02-26T11:34:00.007-08:002012-02-26T11:46:30.478-08:00Quilt Kits for Sale and Where I've BeenI promised last year that if I put up any quilt-related items for sale on Ebay I would let it be known on this blog. I've listed three quilt kits--one is a Fig Tree Tulip Sampler Lap Quilt and two are Kaffe Fassett quilts which include all the same fabrics as the originals. None are still available commercially. If you'd like to take a peek, look here I love these quilts. However, I know I'll never have time to make them so I'm letting them go.

Now about doll quilts. Just before Christmas I overdid it cleaning carpets and moving heavy boxes and furniture. A few days later I had a lot of pain in my right shoulder and by the end of the week I couldn't raise that arm even to comb my hair. The doctor took an x-ray and I was diagnosed with calcific tendonitis which the literature describes as causing "exquisite" pain. That's not the word I would have chosen.

A couple of weeks later another x-ray showed the calcifications as resolved, but I was still in a lot of pain. After a cortisone short and a month of physical therapy, I was still hurting so the doctor sent me in for an MRI. I still have some calcifications and a lot of inflammation, but I am happy to report I do not have a rotator cuff tear.

So it's back to physical therapy, icing, and taking Advil. I haven't been able to do much sewing or quilting in the past few weeks although I'm starting to ease back into it slowly. I hope to start making doll quilts again soon.Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-73514625570094185782012-01-21T10:25:00.000-08:002012-01-21T10:27:06.910-08:00Black and White and Red Doll Quilt<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyarexMLz1iiwvxpsCHbkW_TD6aakA8JM9sa53qvgscPrawLuPhyqz22hUSdD7zR17GKgytkr4_LrWWGAK3q3x_Vh0JnCNK4rmy7q4cUemqd38RQZuNEQybPJHcung6MiGN9AGuIdcNlxq/s400/100_3953.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700153514524545714" />
The blocks are 1.5" square. I've quilted and bound 3 full sized quilts, made 25 doll quilts, knit 24 pairs of socks, and knit 39 items for charity. I've also read 159 books. Good grief!

I have over 50 doll quilts now and have made more than that as I've given a number of them away. I still want to make them, but not quite as many. I'm aiming for one a month this next year although I may end up making more than that. They're so addictive and fast! I'm mulling over whether I want to do the one house a day project or not, but haven't decided on that yet. I suspect probably not.

I am an avid sock knitter and have tried to make three adult pairs and one baby pair every month which is just too much. I have almost 100 pairs of adult socks (not counting those I've given away) and about half that many pairs of baby socks. I don't want to stop knitting socks, but I'm going to aim for one or perhaps two pairs of adult socks per month. See my blog, Knitting Only Socks, to see my progress.

I will continue to knit for charity--see Knitting for Peace but I want to do other knitting as well. A brand new blog on knitting mittens Knitting Only Mittens has its grand opening tomorrow and I've begun another blog, My Other Knitting, to document hats, scarves, and other items which are not for charity and not socks or mittens.

So what about quilting? I'm going to work a bit more on large quilts. I have at least 40 tops made by my husband's great-aunt Clara which need to be quilted and bound and I have kits and patterns for many others.

I have decided to make a serendipity scrap quilt which will be full sized and hand-quilted. I'm not doing any quilting now until after Christmas. There's a ham and a turkey in the refrigerator, pies and cookies baked, candy dishes with chocolates and nuts, wrapped gifts piled high under the tree, and we are enjoying the company of our house guests--two sons and a daughter-in-law. One son and his wife live across the country and can't be here but another son and daughter-in-law will be here on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. So quilting will have to wait. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-60333312750162337902011-12-12T12:50:00.001-08:002011-12-12T14:58:39.864-08:00Building Houses from Scraps<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTY-5D7CZdq4Ws05XAKQPCazgbwukc1US5Px0oXjP2Gcq_nDKEQQer-xYAtCNtMLO-Qypk1yJYrLBeb49U4IN65J6zgxOepHcOBa99aJvEuiWxoDMyHrIH_0AtHJ05cTOudPd5QdN0IQdy/s320/100_3899.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685354068291953778" />
There's a new icon on my sidebar. It's from building houses from scraps. This a sew along where quilters will piece one 3" house block each day in 2012. I'll be (hopefully) getting the block as a .pdf later this week. Here is the webpage address. Note the Google translator button on the left. The translation isn't perfect, but it helps. There are over 800 people signed up so far. If you want to join, send an e-mail to Jeanneke at mail@jeanneke.com If you have a blog, include the address and she'll add it to her sidebar. She'll be emailing all those who join the pattern on December 15th.

I'm a little nervous about this as it seems daunting. Each 3" square has 16 pieces and will need 8 different fabrics. It's the number of so many small pieces that worry me, not the fabrics! I have plenty of those and have begun pressing little pieces in readiness. I will use only blues for the sky and yellows for the windows, but I'm going to use the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink when it comes to the rest f the fabrics. I know some organized quilters will use only 1930s feedbacks or only batiks, but no, not me! I'm going to use everything!Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-12741082860923787722011-12-07T11:09:00.001-08:002011-12-07T11:16:43.319-08:00Red and White Doll Quilt<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCh1Y7_qi2n5bloNSU5nU3ReSetoqZCF2sICvOQZTRvurBxsWheLnatuoCO5MlFsUt0iBVGjzQxYR0905rCSYHKcTEfGaLi-dxFmOLxZPELBVizI1PxU0QjOHqUNSZ1Q8Udh-RKd4QsMEn/s400/100_3891.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683467382171437122" />
There's been a lot of discussion on quilt blogs over the past few months about red and white quilts brought about the beautiful exhibit in New York City last March. I'd been thinking about making a red and white quilt and then, while looking through boxes trying to find my Christmas ornaments, I came across an unfinished red and white doll quilt top. I have no idea when I pieced this. I quilted it and here it is, just in time for Christmas! It's 14" X 20".Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-77082570845808921502011-12-02T16:00:00.000-08:002011-12-02T16:04:50.092-08:00Ebay ItemsLast year I posted on this blog that I would be de-stashing and selling some BOMs and quilt kits on Ebay. Well, finally I've started to do that. You can find what I've listed so far here. Items include a vintage doll quilt, a couple of Cheri Saffiote patterns/kits, an Elly Sienkiewiczf kit for A Sampler for All Seasons Block, and Around the Town BOM. I love all these items still, but I know I'll never get around to making them and want to find them good homes. Go take a peek if you're interested. I will be listing more items in the next few weeks and months.Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-46496323578517527062011-11-20T12:04:00.000-08:002011-11-20T12:26:12.084-08:00Vintage Blue Four Patch Doll Quilt<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj283xWq6YcYuLX9l4ATCzP8oiLkS2jfLneY3xdaijyt7QkFxYe30yKhDphwa-VWHL4wsArZ934zF2qALSK8NywYzL4RWU9_bKqN8cZmDLud5wqdSaCH5pj9R52IjA_Ma4J53DiHphpiAP3/s400/100_3859.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677172086968495442" />
This quilt was made of four inch blocks pieced by John's great-aunt Clara. I also wanted to make it autumn in feeling and so I sorted through my fabrics and chose those I felt best represented the season.

There are oranges for pumpkins and the glow of the full moon; rusts and dark reds for the leaves on the snowball tree and for apples; purple and dark blues for the sky at twilight and the last of the grapes; browns for tree trunks and the little wild birds; creams and whites for fog and the sheep in the fields; soft yellows for the last of the pale sunlight; greens for the leaves not yet turned, and some bright blues for the dazzling sky before the winter storms begin. I chose the setting fabric for the rain I know is coming, rain which will perhaps bringing ice and snow with it. It is bound in bright yellow to remind me that spring and summer and the sun will return.

It is hand pieced and hand quilted in a cross hatch pattern. The blocks are 3" square and the quilt is 12" 16".Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-35368280126876596202011-11-14T14:12:00.000-08:002011-11-20T11:35:03.738-08:00Four Patch Quilts TeaserI'm working on four patch quilts this month. Well, I have a couple of more months.Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-76646799540141726392011-09-23T06:39:00.000-07:002011-09-26T05:21:43.111-07:00What I've Been Doing<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-NI5vnUP2yVMCjNM-oZmgmgmogbPScZlQGpBuHTyc0MVjCHa1afP2QIn9kRzZhpIAE0s_K_wLpaEu96-Qjcwr-o_mGMFG-_ViQhKRDhqcvZWJlZU9rLSF8m3YrIoifSgYBPTO76nWqjsh/s400/100_3763.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655551978962914114" />
What I haven't been doing is making doll quilts.

I bought some new quilt books and have spent a lot of time drooling over the quilts in them. Oh, how I want to make some of them!

But I'm working every Tuesday and Thursday at the Oregon State University Valley Library doing reference and it's been busy! Classes start on Monday. And I'm volunteering at the OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop one morning a week. Their profits are used for scholarships, something I strongly support as we have four sons; one is an OSU graduate and another gets his degree next June. I've also volunteered my services as a volunteer at the Benton County Historical Museum. I spent over two years earning a master's degree in Archival Studies and I'd like to put it to good use! Add to that serving as Program Committee Co-chair for the Mary's River Quilt Guild, spending time with my husband and grown children, taking care of my garden and chickens, and knitting socks and hats for charity, and well, my life is full.

And speaking of the Benton County Historical Museum (where our quilt guild meets), I recently attended a show which is part of Quilt Country.

The show featured New York Beauty quilts, collected by Bill Volckening, Portland quilt historian and Oregon Quilt Project volunteer. Here is a link to his blog, which you will want to check out as one of his most recent posts features gorgeous little doll-sized quilts by Andrea Balosky.Moniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12434395798719359718noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1933933971901500694.post-578876877859447392011-09-02T08:38:00.000-07:002011-09-02T08:46:27.664-07:00New SeriesIt still feels like summer. The skies are clear, the high temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, but there's fog along the river in the mornings now, the public schools open on Tuesday, and it's cooler at night so yes, fall is coming on.

I'm thinking of my next series of doll quilts. Do you remember that joke from your elementary school days: What is black and white and red (read) all over? The answer is, of course, a newspaper. I have a lot of black/white prints and solid white and black and red so that might be fun one. I also like the idea of doing a Maple Leaf block series in different colors. Or maybe applique pumpkins with a flying geese border.

It's going to have to wait a few days thought. Three of my sons and their wives are coming to visit this Labor Day weekend. The fourth is in rural Vermont where, thankfully, they only lost their land line phone (now restored) and aren't dealing with the horrendous devastation Hurricane Irene wrought.
